Greetings Fellow Johsonites,

In response to the many requests and questions by scores of graduates of SCJ concerning our next grand reunion, The SCJNAA has begun early planning and preparations for a grand reunion in late 2013.  Many other questions are being asked by Johnsonites who desperately want to have a successful grand reunion in the tradition of past grand reunions.  Some of these questions include but are not limited to the following:

·        When will this grand reunion be held?
·        What will be the schedule of events?
·        What will it cost for full participation in the grand reunion?
·        Can various classes celebrate their individual class reunion with the grand reunion?

And on and on and on …

Well how about this for the next SCJ grand reunion ……the dates for the grand reunion 2013 will be December 27 – 29, 2013!

The venue for the grand reunion 2013 will be the Hyatt Riverfront Savannah.  The schedule for the grand reunion 2013 will be:

  • Friday evening, December 27 – “Meet and Greet” Hospitality Parlor, Hyatt Riverfront
  • Saturday evening, December 28 –Grand Banquet, Hyatt Riverfront Grand Ballroom
  • Sunday morning, December 29 – Grand Reunion Worship Service, site to be determined (TBD possibly SCJ High School auditorium with lunch to follow worship service in the rotunda of the main entrance)

The cost for full participation and for individual events has not yet been determined, but will be decided soon.

Individual class reunion activities are welcome and may be integrated with the grand reunion activities.

Other activities are also being considered at this time to ensure that your time at the grand reunion 2013 will be filled with exciting and memorable things as we make new atom smasher friendships and renew old ones.

The events committee of the SCJNAA is working very hard to “bring it” to you, your classmates, family and guests.  So please mark your calendars now and commit to being in Savannah the weekend of December 27 – 29, 2013 for this very special time in the history of our dear alma mater.

The Savannah Tribune Remembers Bettye Anne Battiste

Bettye Anne Battiste
Bettye Anne Battiste

Bettye Anne Battiste, 64, educator, community servant, and author transitioned from this life on July 13. She lived a rich and spontaneous life that typified a penchant for learning, teaching, family and friends.
She was born to William and Lillian Battiste on July 28, 1947 and was preceded in death by her mother. Her formal education was in the Savannah- Chatham County Public Schools, which culminated as a top-ten graduate from Sol C. Johnson High School in 1965, where she was a student council and yearbook enthusiast. Bettye Anne graduated from Savannah State University in 1969 with a BS degree in Biology. She received a full fellowship to the State University at Brockport, New York in 1971, where she received her Masters in Urban Education and finished Summa Cum Laude. Bettye Anne continued her postgraduate studies at the University of Florida where she earned a doctorate in Early Childhood Education.
Dr. Battiste taught students from primary school through college levels. Her professional career began in Brockport, New York where she was the director of the State University of Brockport Childcare Program and later taught first grade at Public School 27 in Rochester, New York. She directed a Head Start program in Houston, Texas, impacting the lives of hundreds of inner-city school children. Returning to Savannah, she worked as an administrator at SSU and later began a career at Armstrong State Atlantic University from which she retired in 2007 as professor and department head of Early Childhood Education. During her tenure at AASU, Dr. Battiste took a sabbatical from 1998-2002 and served as Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools with the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.
A member of St. Phillip A.M.E., Dr. Battiste faithfully served on the Celestine Guild. Other memberships included: Leadership Savannah; Leadership Georgia; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; National Council of Negro Women; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; Savannah State University National Alumni; Sol C. Johnson National Alumni, and the Mandingo Socio-Civic Club.
In 1984, she was elected to the Savannah-Chatham County Public School Board. She served nine years, representing the 2nd district and enjoyed a short tenure as School Board President. Dr. Battiste was a prolific writer. Along with professional articles and extensive research, she published Cycles of Unfinished Business, a novel that highlighted Black middle-class life in Savannah. Two other works and countless journals remained unpublished at the time of her death.
Bettye Anne enjoyed journaling, cooking, traveling, reading, and golfing. She was devoted to her family and friends. It was not unusual for her to surprise one of them with a wrapped gift from one of her adventures, an excerpt of something she had read or written, or a blooming orchid or floral bouquet. Her quick wit and unmatched, whimsical expressions rendered audiences speechless, peeling with laughter, or simply reflecting.
She leaves to mourn: Theron “Ike” Carter, her devoted husband of 24 years; her father, William Battiste, Jr.; a sister, Antoinette Battiste; nephews Marlin Heyward (Tamaira) of St. Petersburg, FL, and Quentin Heyward of Philadelphia, PA; grand niece and nephew Sydney and Brandon Heyward of St. Petersburg; Charles Heyward (brotherin law), and many other relatives. Also grieving are numerous friends, professional associates, members of St. Phillip Monumental, sisters of Delta Sigma Theta, and the Sol C. Johnson class of 1965.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority , Inc. will conduct an Omega Omega Service on Wednesday, July 18 at Adams Funeral Home at 7:00 PM. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 19, 11:00 AM at St Phillip AME, MLK Blvd, Reverend Scottie Swinney officiating. Class of 1963 ~ 50th Class Reunion

Dear JHS Class of 1963:

We are in the early stages of planning our 50th class reunion. Your help is needed in compiling a contact list. The hour is late, and the list needs to be created as soon as possible. The success of our reunion depends largely on our getting a good turnout from as many class members as we can. So, spread the word and encourage as many of our classmates as possible to come along. We need you to send us names, phone numbers, mailing addresses, and e-mails of class members. Put the word out on Facebook and Twitter too.

If you are interested in working with the reunion, your participation would be appreciated. Direct all questions to our contact information below. Your participation is what will make our reunion great!

The next correspondence will be a poll asking your choice of dates and interest in participation.

Coach Roosevelt Coleman is escorted by Rose Marie Milton into the SSU King-Fraser Ballroom and is greeted to a standing ovation from the attendees at his retirement banquet.(17 APR 2010)

Coleman honored for service to Johnson High School

Hometown Hero Video:  http://www.wtoc.com/global/story.asp?s=11893841

In his 31 years as a coach and teacher at Johnson High School, Roosevelt Coleman wanted to give his students and athletes something they'd remember and, hopefully, appreciate.

Judging by the more than 200 friends, colleagues and former students who filled Savannah State's King-Frazier Ballroom for a retirement banquet commemorating his contributions, he did just that.

"I tried to make their experience with me a memorable one that they would remember," Coleman said. "I'd say, 'I want you to remember something that we did in this classroom or on the football field or on the track, and remember it for the rest of your life.' "

When the school year ends in June, Coleman's years of service will come to a close. Coleman said he and his wife, Vernelle, plan to spend time with family, volunteer within the community, and make more frequent use of their football season tickets at Florida A&M University, his alma mater.

"There a lot of things in mind that I'd like to do," Coleman said. "...Now I don't have anything to hold me back."

The banquet's Master of Ceremonies, Gerald "Lil' G" Arrington, opened the evening with an anecdote many of today's students under Coleman can relate to.

"Coach Coleman does not know me by name," Arrington said. "He knows me as Young Man. 'How are you today, Young Man?' 'I'm good coach.'"

College star

Prior to embarking on his long teaching and coaching career, Coleman starred at FAMU. There he played tackle, was named the team's Most Outstanding Lineman and was an All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention. He helped the Rattlers win the Black College National Championship in 1959, 1961 and 1962, and after college, signed with the Houston Oilers and later with the Buffalo Bills.

He began his coaching career in Statesboro with stops in Albany and Pensacola, Fla.

Coleman arrived at Johnson High School in 1978 as teacher and head football coach and has served as athletic director.

Among the achievements Coleman said he was most proud of is having helped the Atomsmashers football team do something no other team in Savannah has managed to do: defeat Camden County.

"Since Camden County came in the region, we're the only team in the region that's beat them," Coleman said. "We beat them two years in a row in '91 and '92. Jim Walsh was the coach. He handled the offense and I handled the defense."

Also a mentor

Johnson principal Freddie Gilyard said Coleman's reach at the school far exceeds athletics.

"He is first and foremost a teacher," Gilyard said. "And he recognizes how important it is to hone the kids' interest in the classroom and make sure they do well first there. We're losing a great leader."

In his time at Johnson, Coleman has served as a mentor not just to his students and athletes, but also to teachers and athletic directors throughout the city.

Peggy Johnson, athletic director of Savannah's public schools, recalled her first year as athletic director at Savannah High School in 1996, and Coleman's help in her learning on the job.

"I was really green," Johnson said. "He is somebody who had always taken the time, come over to you, it doesn't matter who you are, coach or athletic director, and say 'I'll help you.' I've seen him do that with kids, adults, it didn't matter."

Beach athletic director Ronald Booker, a basketball coach for more than 30 years, first met Coleman when he was a student-athlete attending Beach.

"Coach is an innovator," Booker said. "He's abreast of what's going on politically and how it relates to athletics not only locally but around the state. I think all of us have at one point come to him for advice or to find out what's going on because Coach Coleman always seems to know."

Seeing a ballroom full of people there to thank him for his years of service, Coleman said he felt he owed them thanks.

"It's like you wake up and God says 'Come into the kingdom, and these are your people,'" Coleman said. "They are a part of me. They made me. They made me be a better person."

Greeting Fellow Atomsmashers,

It has been my pleasure for the past fifteen months to serve as your National Alumni Association president. This time has been filled with excitement, fun and a lot of reflections on what might be called “the good ole days.” We have rekindled old friendships and started up some new ones too. Our active membership has grown from a precious handful of dedicated smashers to over seventy-five and counting.

Membership renewal is in progress now with the membership year starting July 1, 2009. So please renew early. The events committee and the membership committee have planned several exciting and fun-filled membership drives for this year. Our goal for this year is to double active membership. And for your convenience a membership renewal form is included with this mail out.

You will be pleased to know that your SCJNAA is presently involved with several projects that are of great importance to our association and our alma mater. A few of these projects are:

۩          Safe side walk project: to eliminate an unsafe walk area in front of the school.

۩          Athletic Hall of Fame:  to include all athletic accomplishments of SCJ’s athletes, coaches and staff.

۩          Atomsmasher Class Call: an appeal to all classes of SCJ for a minimum donation of $100 for the replacement/updating of an aging PA system in the gym.

۩          SCJNAA Chapter formation: establishment of National Alumni Association chapters in Savannah and Atlanta.

۩          Teacher Recognition Affair: program recognizing the contributions of past and present teachers, administrations and staff of SCJ.

As you can see from this list all Johnsonites every where are going to be needed to bring these rather ambitious projects to a successful conclusion. Therefore, as president of your SCJNAA, I am sending out an Atomsmasher call to action to Johnsonites old and new, near and far, active and non-active to come to the aid of our dear alma mater. Sign up for active alumni membership or renew your current membership today. If membership form and payment is received before July 1, 2009, you will receive a free SCJNAA T-shit (regular cost of T-shirt is $15.00).

I look forward to hearing from you in the very near future. And thanks you for all you do or plan to do for our beloved Alma Mater.

Sincerely,

George L. Maxwell

Sincerely,
